US commander of international forces in Afghanistan on Friday emphasized on the importance of military pressure on militants to get them to negotiating table.
"Our goal is to help bring about a peaceful solution to this war," John Nicholson said during a security meeting in Parwan province, north of Kabul. "But we also know that sometimes peace is not possible until you put more pressure on the enemy."
Referring to Pakistans alleged support for terrorists, Nicholson suggested that the U.S. government has announced that it would put pressure on the country to address the problem.
Afghanistanian government has repeatedly called on the Taliban to join peace talks, but the group has rejected the invitation. The call was reinterred during an international conference in Kabul this week where President Ashraf Ghani announced a proposal for peace with the Taliban.
"We strongly support this peace initiative going forward," Nicholson said.
Referring to political tension in Afghanistan, the general said that politics should not undermine security.
On Thursday, Pentagon also called on the Taliban to join peace process.
"The Taliban has to abandon terror, it has to abandon violence, and it has to support the Afghan constitution. Then they have to come to the table. And that is, ultimately, for the people of Afghanistan to come to an ultimate political resolution," Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Dana W. White said.
